New Tools for Automated O-Ring Application

Innovative O-Ring Installation Device Provides Aid to Employers and Employees

AGI, a leading provider of sophisticated automation technologies, releases new robotic tools that automate O-Ring Installation. O-Rings are utilized in many products, including medical devices, tractors, valves, and home appliances. This automation technology can be implemented in innumerable manufacturing industries. Two separate advanced dual motion gripper instruments offer means to position and seal O-rings for fully-automated assembly lines and semi-automated single-station hand assists.

AGI’s O-Ring-Assembly Tools come in two sizes: the AGP-6-OR (which has six jaws) and the AGP-8-OR (which has eight). These pneumatic grippers can accommodate placement applications from 3 to 12 inch I.D. Both are designed to facilitate part ejection and part seating and are perfect for installations where an ejector is needed after the part is positioned, or when a seal needs to be placed down a long shaft.

The most obvious advantages that are inherent to automating traditional manual jobs are related to time and cost reduction. Typically, a partially automated hand-assist station can speed the process of O-Ring application by at least three times. But according to AGI President, Peter Farkas, that is just one of the many advantages of utilizing advanced robotics in this specialized function. O-rings are easily damaged or twisted when mounted manually or with a three-prong device. But, “there is generally far less damage done to the O-Ring itself when installed by a 6 or 8 jaw gripper,” says Mr. Farkas. This is crucial because damaged or incorrectly mounted O-rings can result in failed seals, and ultimately, a faulty product.

Furthermore, specialists in ergonomics have found that repeated-stress injuries are a leading cause of many ailments, including tendonitis and carpel tunnel syndrome. In addition to worker injury and decreased morale, manufacturing firms suffer soaring medical costs and production losses as a result of these types of injuries. AGI’s O-ring installation tools help to curb such worker injuries and boost the bottom line.

AGI’s significant investments to their production plant allow them to deliver the O-Ring placement products to customers with little lead time. They can now offer their state-of-the-art technologies at even more aggressive pricing, making available automation technologies to manufacturing plants of all sizes.

About AGI: AGI supplies a complete range of sophisticated automation products that include parallel grippers, rotary actuators, thrusters, linear actuator slides, mini slides, tool changers, and overload devices. All products are available in imperial and metric versions for flexibility of design for a world market. For more information on this product or AGI, call (203) 459-8345 or visit www.agi-automation.com.

Swivel unit SRH – Modular is simply better

SCHUNK Inc. introduces the new series of 180° swivel heads SRH. The swivel heads of the new SRH are completely modular in structure and consist of the tried and tested SRU rotary modules combined with two swivel corners, EDF electric feed-throughs, and MDF media feed-throughs. This means precise rotation and long tool life using proven components. Using standard components also means short delivery times and high availability of the components due to minimal spare parts inventory.

The new SRH series comes in six sizes and twelve torques ranging from 0.9 to 67.8 Nm (0.6 ft-lb to 50 ft-lb). The electric feed-through of the SRH is designed to use digital signals for sensors or simple actuators. Even bus signals can be fed through the unit as an additional option. The EDF feed-throughs ensure considerable greater reliability than the breakage-prone method of routing cables through the center bore of a rotary actuator.

Even more, the connections of the SRH swivel head are easily accessible and universally equipped with housing connectors or sockets. The media feed-through is directly connected to the mounting surfaces of the swivel head, and both the swivel head itself and the rotating grippers can be supplied with compressed air directly without hoses. This ensures the necessary flexibility for all automation solutions.

Polyurethane Tubing Offers Rubber-Like Flexibility with the Durability of Plastic

Stocked in Both Ether & Ester Formulations

Southampton, PA — Now available from tubing manufacturer NewAge® Industries is polyurethane tubing that combines the best properties of plastic and rubber. Called Superthane®, it withstands wear, abrasion, weathering, chemicals, fuels, and moisture while it remains flexible. Superthane may be used for a wide variety of gas and fluid transfer uses.

NewAge Industries’ polyurethane tubing is a durable product designed to withstand the rigors of applications involving pneumatics, petroleum-based* chemicals and liquids, granular material and slurry transfer, and protective jacketing, as well as clean fluids and gases. Superthane offers abrasion and tear resistance, high tensile strength, and low compression set. It also handles pressure and vacuum applications better than corresponding sizes of PVC or rubber. The tubing exhibits good chemical resistance and excellent weathering characteristics, setting it apart from many other plastics. Superthane is naturally flexible and needs no plasticizers, which can leach out and cause tube hardening and flow contamination.

Two formulations—ether and ester—are manufactured by NewAge to offer customers a choice. Both styles contain non-toxic ingredients that conform to FDA standards. Ether-based Superthane tubing is recommended for applications involving water, humid conditions, and fungi. It also resists UV well, and the material is listed by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF 61). The ester-based version offers a slightly higher tensile strength and operating temperature, and in most cases, costs a bit less.

Superthane is available from stock in sizes from 1/16” through 2” I.D. A large inventory is maintained in order to ship products the same day that they are ordered. Of course, JIT, or Just In Time, shipments may be arranged as well.

In addition to clear Superthane, NewAge Industries stocks the tubing in nine colors for easy multiple line identification. A braid-reinforced style, Urebrade®, is also stocked for higher pressure applications. Customization of Superthane includes special colors, cut-to-length pieces, thermal tube bonding, heat-formed shapes, larger sizes, and hose assemblies.

*Additives in today’s petroleum products warrant field testing.

Micro Solenoid Driver Connector Saves Energy, Coils

Canfield Connector’s Series D5400 Micro Solenoid Driver (MSD) is a connector that improves performance while reducing heat buildup in solenoid valve operators. The MSD induces faster solenoid pull-in with a high input voltage then automatically reduces voltage during hold-in. This not only increases efficiency but extends solenoid life and saves energy. The MSD is available in Mini and NEMA 4 DIN 43650 Form “A:/ISO 4400, EN175301-803:2000 enclosures and can be used to replace low voltage power supplies allowing a 24 VDC solenoid valve to be operated by 120 VAC. It also enables coils to be energized for an extended period of time without burnout. The MSD is available in both fixed or adjustable versions with standard LED indicator lights and a 9 foot cable.

All Canfield Connector products are manufactured to ISO 9001:2000 with design specifications to the highest quality standards. Complete specifications can be found at www.canfieldconnector.com or by calling Bob Howard at 330-758-8299 x 122.

XM Series Direct Acting Valve Rated for Mobile Voltage Operation Available from Parker Hannifin

Parker Hannifin Corporation (NYSE: PH) offers the XM Series Inline Valve for multiple industrial applications in a variety of pneumatic markets. XM Series direct acting valves are available in both 3-way and 4-way versions.

The XM Inline Valve is a 1/8", 2-position, single solenoid, spring return 3-way or 4-way valve with AC or DC operating voltages. The 12 and 24 VDC coils are rated for mobile voltage operation.

XM Series 3-way valves can function as normally open or normally closed valves. Optional integrated individual flow controls are available on the 4-way valves that meter the exhaust flow from each working port to the exhaust port of the valve. This option eliminates additional component flow controls and fittings between a cylinder and a valve.
The new XM Inline Valve Series is direct operated; unlike a solenoid air pilot valve, there is no minimum operating pressure required to shift the valve. The solenoid coil operates an armature pin that directly impacts the spool mechanism to shift the valve.

Although there is no minimum operating pressure, the XM valve must be selected for specific system pressure. Operating pressure range of the 3-way/3-port version is 0 to 125 PSIG/ -14.7 to 125 PSIG. The operating pressure range of the 4-way/4-port version is -14.7 PSIG to 125 PSIG.

XM Series Valve types include an inline 19mm pitch version, or a subbase version. Inline valves can be mounted as a single valve. They can also be manifold mounted on an Inlet Exhaust Manifold (IEM) that accepts both 3-way and 4-way valves without additional mounting kits.

The 3-way valves can be configured for normally open or normally closed functions by mounting valves 180 degrees opposite each other; additional gaskets are not required. The 4-way valves with integrated flow controls can be mounted directly to the IEM manifold, since the adjustment screws are located on the body of the valve away from the manifold.

Inline valves have the working ports (2 and 4) tapped in the valve body. Subbase valves require a manifold with working ports tapped 1/8" in each manifold station. Each manifold consists of a segmented subbase and an end plate kit.

XM 3-way and 4-way subbase valves can be mounted on the same manifold assembly. Standard 3-way valve function is normally closed. Port isolation discs are used if 3-way normally open and normally closed functions are required on the same manifold. The 4-way integrated flow control is available on 4-way subbase valves as well.
The XM Inline Valve Series replaces the MicroKing valve series, which has been discontinued. For information about choosing the correct XM valve to replace a MicroKing valve, please email crossmymicroking@parker.com with a part number, application details and contact information. A representative will follow-up to assist in cross-referencing.

Current catalog information about the new XM Valve can be obtained by contacting Parker Hannifin Corporation, Pneumatic Division. Phone 269-629-5000 or visit us online at www.parker.com/pneumatics.

SCHUNK Products Certified for Use in Cleanrooms

Many SCHUNK products can now be used in cleanrooms without hesitation. This is confirmed by the certificate issued in December 2007 by TÜV Süd.

The certificate confirms suitability for use in Class 5 cleanrooms according to ISO 14644. ISO Class 5 is comparable to Class 100 of the US-Fed. -Std. 209, which is no longer valid, but still frequently referred to.

SCHUNK succeeded in certifying entire series, instead of just single products, as is often the case. Therefore, the certificate covers all versions and variants of the products. In particular, the following series have been certified:
PGN-plus parallel gripper
DPG-plus sealed parallel gripper
PZN-plus centric gripper
DPZ-plus sealed centric gripper
MPG miniature parallel gripper
MPZ miniature centric gripper
SRU rotary module

Customers and potential customers can request a PDF of the certificate from SCHUNK, therefore eliminating the need for certificates of suitability for use or conducting measurements before using products in cleanrooms. This saves time and money.

Initial measurements of SCHUNK grippers equipped with additional HUE protective covers achieved excellent results with ISO Class 2. Although final certification is yet to be granted, grippers with protective covers are already available from SCHUNK.

New complete vacuum gripper system with compact design.

Standardized vacuum gripper solutions for rows, layers and structured surfaces.

For more than 20 years, Coval has developed customized vacuum solutions for automated handling applications in the packaging, plastics, automotive and other industries. These customized systems are now available as a standard product with the introduction of the NEW “Coval Vacuum Gripper” series with Twin-Tech technology, which combines a high flow vacuum generator, integrated vacuum controls, vacuum gauge and gripper mat into one complete and compact unit.

The “Coval Vacuum Gripper” is small, lightweight and energy efficient due to the advanced Twin-Tech technology which consists of two parts (IVC and IPR). The IVC (Integrated Vacuum Control) technology utilizes micro solenoid valves to control the vacuum and blow-off functions. These micro valves are significantly smaller than normal valves and are integrated into the housing of the vacuum generator, operating via one 24VDC- M12 connector. Utilization of the IVC considerably reduces size and weight of the gripper unit. The IPR (Intelligent Pressure Regulation) regulates the input air pressure for optimal performance thus reducing compressed air consumption, resulting in substantial energy savings. The gripper also includes the “Silent Technology” to reduce the noise level of the vacuum generator.

The “Coval Vacuum Gripper” can be provided at any desired size and multiple grippers can be used in series to create “row” or “layer” grippers, enabling vacuum zoning. The new vacuum gripper is provided with foam mat or suction cups, dependent on the application requirements. It is also available without integrated vacuum generator for use with high-flow vacuum pumps for specific applications.

The Rexroth Air Service AS5 extends the family of AS Series air preparation units.

The AS5 FRL family features modular construction, modern industrial design, and a compact layout. Its excellent performance via air connections up to 1” allow high flow capacity for large-scale industrial applications.
The Rexroth Air Service (AS) system satisfies industry demands for compressed air preparation. Along with the standard functions of filtering, regulating, and lubricating, this modular family of maintenance units also includes shut-off valves, 3/2 valves, and soft start valves, all in compact dimensions. The new AS5 model extends the line for use in high flow applications.

With the AS5 series, Rexroth expands the AS family to the high flow range. The AS5 regulator offers a flow of up to 265 CFM (7500 l/min) with a width of only 3.3”. The AS5 is available with 3/4” and 1” thread connections in BSPP and NPTF forms. Series AS3 carries up to 159 CFM (4500 l/min) with a module width of 2.5” and 3/8” or 1/2” thread connections. The most compact series, AS2, with a width of 2” and 1/4” or 3/8” thread connections, is suited for flows of up to 92 CFM (2600 l/min).

The family is generally characterized by ease of maintenance. Large maintenance windows enable clear viewing of the filter condensate levels and lubricator fill levels. The filters can be optionally fitted with a contamination display. Thanks to the easily accessible bayonet catch, the reservoirs can be easily removed and refastened as necessary.

The lubricators are available with an oil-level indicator and Rexroth ST6 sensor for remote monitoring. The patented oil filling system permits push-button filling of the lubricators.

The Rexroth Air Service system impresses with its modern, prizewinning industrial design. The AS2 series has already received the if-Product design award 2006, and has now also been nominated for the German Design Award 2007.

The components’ smooth surface is easy to clean, and the compact layout combined with new materials makes the AS family particularly lightweight – even the larger units of the AS5 series. Each series is fully modular, designed for functional flexibility, and customizable to the user’s requirements. In addition, single components can be removed from an assembled manifold even after installation. Modifications and extensions are possible at any time.

The Series AS family is suitable for use in all industries. During engineering, special attention was paid to meeting industry-specific requirements such as locking capability, an automotive industry requirement. For this reason, the AS family can be used in almost every application where compressed air quality must be closely controlled.

CAD data for all AS components and an online configurator for factory supplied custom assemblies are available from the Internet via our "Interactive Designer".

INNOVATIVE ZERO LEAKAGE CONTROL VALVES FOR LIQUID AND GAS

Our unique Flexible Seal Seat_ assures bubble-tight performance. The Kepner Flexible Seal Seat_ design offers positive leakage control of liquid or gas. The seat design is a carefully engineered combination of metal-to-metal and resilient O-Ring seal contact. The O-Ring is securely retained at the seat rather than on the poppet, protecting it from the destructive abrading and blasting effect of the flow; seal life is extended. Seat “wire drawing” common to conventional valves has been eliminated by the Flexible Seal Seat_ design. The seal closes around scratch-es, dents, and other irregularities and effectively prevents any leakage past the seat. A wide choice of O-Ring seal elastomers is offered for system compatibility. The Flexible Seal Seat_ design is available in check, relief, shuttle, and pilot operated check valves, and has been successfully applied to millions of fluid control situations.

CLOSED: Relaxed O-Ring seal and gentle seal-to-poppet contact guarantees (No Flow) low pressure sealing and eliminates valve chatter.

OPEN: Seal flexes to close off all external leakage around end cap. (Full Flow) Enclosure protects O-Ring seal, prevents seal displacement.

CLOSED: Seal still holding external leakage now also flexes around poppet. (Reverse Higher pressures tighten the seal. Bubble-tight shutoff. Checked)

- LEAK TIGHT SEALING
- POSITIVE ACTION EVEN AT LOW PRESSURE
- FREEDOM FROM CHATTER
