Efficient
Gripping of Large Strokes 2-Finger Long Stroke
Gripper PHL from SCHUNK
The PHL from SCHUNK alternatively disposes of a
multi-tooth guidance or a profiled rail
guidance, which increases the degree of
efficiency of the gripper. For many
applications, smaller and more cost-efficient
sizes can now be selected. Thus over-sizing is
avoided, the air consumption and energy is
minimized, and the required space for
applications is reduced.
With multi-tooth jaw guidance, the PHL is
particularly suitable for rough environments.
The gripper can be equipped with roller bearings
and profiled rail guidance, achieving a higher
degree of efficiency. The guiding carriage of
the gripper fingers are equipped with ball
bearings, which minimizes friction and evenly
distributes forces. Since the jaw guide is
sealed and permanently lubricated, the bearing
capacity of the gripper increases and reduces
wear. Users benefit from the reliability,
precision and long service life of the gripper.
The PHL is available in five sizes with piston
diameters between 25-63 mm (1”-2.5”), generating
gripping forces up to 3250N (740 lbf). The long
stroke ranges up to 320 mm (12.5”) of total
stroke and the maximum admissible finger length
is 500mm (20”) which increases the flexibility
in design. Every size is available as a special
version with Vinton seals for high temperatures
of up to 130 °C (266° F). Gripper positions can
be monitored by inductive proximity switches or
magnetic switches.

Tolomatics
low-cost ERD rod-style electric actuators now
feature higher forces up to 500 lbs. and
extended stroke lengths
With higher forces and longer stroke lengths,
the economical ERD rod-style electric actuators
can replace pneumatic actuators in a wider range
of applications.
HAMEL, Minn. – Tolomatic has added a new size to
its line of ERD rod-style electric actuators to
provide higher forces and longer stroke lengths
to serve more application requirements. The new
ERD20 is designed with a larger diameter ball
screw and a stroke length of up to 24
inches (609.6 mm). With this line extension, ERD
rod-style electric actuators now deliver forces
up to 500 pounds (2224 N). ERD actuators are
stroke configurable and ship within five days
from order entry at the factory. The products
are suitable for a wide variety of applications,
including product change-overs, pick-and-place,
sorting and diverting, pressing and more.
“With higher forces and longer stroke lengths,
the affordable ERD rod-style electric actuators
can now replace pneumatic actuators in a wider
range of applications,” says Aaron Dietrich,
electric products manager, Tolomatic. “In
addition to greater force and stroke, the ERD20
is available with ball screws for extended and
predictable service life.”
The ERD family of rod-style electric actuators
is available in body sizes that are equivalent
to non-repairable pneumatic cylinder bore sizes
of 5/8-inch (15.88-mm), 1-inch (25.4-mm),
1.5-inch (38.1-mm) and 2-inch (50.8-mm). Strokes
are available in lengths up to 8 inches (203.2
mm) for the ERD06, 10 inches (254 mm) for the
ERD10, and 24 inches (609.6 mm). for the ERD15
and 20 sizes, Forces range up to 20
pounds (89 N) for the smallest size, and to 500
pounds (2224 N) for the ERD20. The actuators
accept a wide variety of NEMA and metric stepper
and servo motors. In addition, all four sizes of
the ERD product family are offered with 300
series stainless steel options and IP67 options
for harsh environments, such as the food and
beverage industry.
Dietrich adds that the ERD actuator comes
standard with a metric-threaded rod end that is
compatible with a wide variety of commercially
available accessories and makes the conversion
from pneumatic to electric even more convenient.
Like most pneumatic actuators in this
performance class, electric ERD products are
round bodied. They feature an oversized main
bearing to accommodate high thrust loads and
provide long life. The main tube and thrust tube
are made of stainless steel for high rigidity
and corrosion resistance, while the
metric-threaded nose mount accepts a jam nut
that provides convenient mounting for many
applications. Mounting options include a rear
trunnion mount, foot mounts or a front flange
mount.
The ERD actuators can accommodate six different
sensing or switching choices: reed, solid-state
PNP (sourcing), solid-state NPN (sinking),
normally open, flying leads or quick-disconnect.
The switches are activated by a standard
internal magnet located inside the thrust tube.
Commonly used for end-of-stroke positioning,
these switches allow clamp-on installation
anywhere along the actuator tube. All switches
are
CE rated and are RoHS compliant for
environmental compatibility.
For more than 50 years, Tolomatic has been a
leading supplier of electric linear actuators,
pneumatic actuators and power transmission
products for factory automation. Its extensive
product line also includes servo-driven
high-thrust actuators, servomotors and stepper
motors, stepper drives and configured

Pneumatic
Actuator Approaches Zero Friction
Airpot Corp. announces the Airpel Plus, their
newest line of high performance, low friction
air cylinder actuators. The benefit engineers
derive from the low friction levels the Airpel
Plus exhibits is an enhanced ability to control
ultra-precise movements, including high speeds
and extremely short travel distances with clean,
long-life pneumatic devices. The inert qualities
and tight tolerances of the glass and graphite
materials used allow engineers to develop
systems that will move, hold, counterbalance or
press accurately and with amazing repeatability.
Applications such as counterbalancing, filament
& wire tensioning, positioning and manipulating
optics, liquids, or other delicate devices, and
measuring weight, creep or tensile strength in
the semiconductor, electronics, medical,
metrology, test & measurement and, laboratory
diagnostics industries will benefit from the
unique capabilities offered by Airpel Plus.
Airpot Corp’s time tested borosilicate glass
cylinder and graphite piston technology used in
the standard Airpel is at the core of the new
line. However, Airpot has adapted the piston
configuration from their frictionless Airpel-AB
Air Bearing Actuators to create, in the Airpel
Plus, a product that approaches the zero
friction of the -AB at a price closer to the low
cost of the Airpel. This price/performance
combination expands the possible uses in
applications that demand accurate force control
and moderate pricing. Airpel Plus maximum
friction levels are approximately 0.5% of load
and their operating temperature range is
-55c-150c. Airpel Plus models are currently
available in 4
standard configurations as single acting
extension models with identical metric sizes,
threads, mounts, and strokes as the Airpel- AB.
Bore diameter choices of 9, 16, 24 and 32 mm are
offered. Double acting configurations are not
standard but available after consultation with
Airpot engineering.
Each of Airpot’s four major product groups,
damping, actuation, displacement and optimized
pneumatic systems, offers instrument quality
pneumatic devices uniquely designed and
optimized for highly accurate and repeatable

Modular
lightweight gripper with long stroke
SCHUNK continues to expand its range of modular
long-stroke electric grippers with the LEG 400,
which can be used in the metal cutting and
automotive industry, along with assembly and
handling tasks. This weight-reduced, lightweight
gripper is equipped with a servo motor and has
a gripping force of up to 1050 N as well as a
variable stroke between zero and 103 mm. Having
only one motor, it weighs 6.5 kg.
Designed according to the modular principle, the
LEG gripper can be equipped with a pneumatic and
electric drive. The user is able to choose the
servo motor as desired. Robot manufacturers can
thus use their own motors and control the
gripper with the same set of commands as the
robot. In addition, the applicable forces can be
measured and controlled with servo-electric
drives. If the LEG is operated with a single
servo motor, both drive spindles are coupled and
the fingers move synchronously. With two motors
on the other hand, the fingers can move to any
position in the gripping range independently of
each other.
The modularity of the LEG goes even further;
both slides and guided slides as well as the
supporting lateral cheeks and the connecting
elements are available in different sizes and
versions. The LEG gripper can thus be adapted
economically to the corresponding task and load.
Optional sensors or image processing systems
make it a sensitive tool in the production,
assembly, and packaging processes. A change
system
that can be used to change the fingers manually
or automatically provides the user with
additional flexibility. Due to the low weight of
the LEG gripper, excellent acceleration and high
speeds are possible, and thus shorter cycle
times and a higher overall power. Alternatively,
smaller actuators or robots can be used with
identical cycle times. That saves energy,
protects the environment and reduces running
costs.

Rapid
Pick & Place with the new PPU-P
With up to 120 cycles per minute, the PPU-P from
SCHUNK is the fastest pneumatic Pick & Place
Unit on the market. Thanks to a
valve control unit, the gripper connected to the
PPU-P can be placed directly over the individual
target position, and actuated
through the standard control interface.
In contrast to conventional pneumatic Pick &
Place Units, the horizontal and vertical motion
of the robust PPU-P unit overlap,
and are positively driven by a curved roller,
which reduces cycle times by one-third. At a 145
mm horizontal stroke, 45 mm (20
mm linear) vertical stroke and up to 1 kg moving
mass, the unit achieves a cycle time of 0.63 s
including 2 x 50 ms gripping time. Therefore the
unit is suitable for various handling and
assembly tasks in the field of electronic
industry, medical technology, and other
industries, where small components are
assembled.
In order to balance build-up tolerances, the
horizontal stroke can be adjusted by up to 12 mm
per side. Moreover, both end positions can be
adjusted by 15 mm, independent from each other,
and differences in height between the mounting
and depositing
position can be balanced without an intermediate
stop.
Due to its bolt pattern, the PPU-P fits smoothly
into SCHUNK’s modular assembly automation
system, and numerous gripping modules and rotary
actuators can be easily combined for any project
at hand.

New
Tolomatic IMA55 integrated servomotor actuator
delivers up to 3,000 pounds of force
The companys most powerful and compact actuator
provides high force and long service life for
heavy-duty industrial applications.
HAMEL, Minn. – Tolomatic’s new, larger version
of its integrated-motor rod-style actuator is
capable of delivering up to 3,000 pounds of
force with a standard ball screw. The Tolomatic
IMA55 actuator is the largest and most powerful
integrated-motor rod-style actuator the company
makes and delivers increased dynamic performance
and longer service life compared to traditional
rod-style actuators. The IMA55 actuator’s unique
integrated motor design is
well suited for applications such as pressing,
clamping, valve control, spot welding and
volumetric filling.
“With the addition of the IMA55 actuator to
Tolomatic’s integrated-motor actuator line, we
now have compact actuators for high-duty-cycle
industrial applications that range in force from
several hundred to 3,000 pounds,” says Aaron
Dietrich, marketing manager, Tolomatic. “The
IMA55 actuator, with its integrated servomotor,
is also shorter for a given stroke length than
other types of rod-style actuators.”
The IMA55 actuator features a hollow-core rotor
design that allows the nut of the screw to pass
inside the rotor, creating a very compact
package. This can decrease overall actuator
length by as much as 18 inches compared to
standard actuators due to the elimination of a
separate motor, motor mount and gearbox. “In
addition,” says Dietrich, “the skewed stator
windings minimize the cogging of the motor and
provide more efficient motion with improved
force repeatability.”
The Tolomatic IMA55 actuator with the standard
ball-screw can exert a force of up to 3,000
pounds and move at a top speed of about 12
inches per second. The IMA55 actuator is
available with a choice of motor windings
optimized for 230 or 460 VAC in any incremental
stroke length from 6 inches to18 inches. Built
with Tolomatic’s Endurance Technology features
for maximum durability and extended service
life, the IMA55 actuator has a patent-pending
lead-screw lubrication system that allows easy
relubrication without disassembly. Tolomatic’s
sizing and selection software makes selecting an
IMA55 actuator easy. All orders are built to
order and shipped with Tolomatic’s
industry-leading five-day delivery.
For more than 50 years, Tolomatic has been a
leading supplier of electric linear actuators,
pneumatic actuators and power transmission

Atlas
Copco Increases Marine Starting Air Solution
Offerings
Atlas Copco has broadened its range of
compressors for marine uses with additional
offerings that include starting, working and
instrument air compressors, as well as air
treatment solutions and pneumatic tools. The
aluminum LT piston compressor range offers
starting air from 2 kW to 15 kW. The addition of
a newly developed LT KE starting air piston
compressor, with a cast iron casing, offers a
run from 60 m³/h (18.5 kW) to 430 m³/h (90 kW).
Designed for the engine room
The new water-cooled LT KE piston compressors
withstand ambient temperatures up to 60°C/140°F,
making them ideal for the engine room in both
fresh and saltwater applications. They also have
the smallest footprint in the market, operate
with noise levels as low as 91dB(a) and have a
vibration foundation of less than 14 mm/sec.
Synthetic oil is standard for the LT KE; they
also run just as smooth and quiet on mineral
oil.
“We’re always looking for new ways to adapt and
the industry-leading technology our customers
have come to rely on and trust into new markets
and applications, and the LT KE is a prime
example of these efforts,” said Robert Eshelman,
vice president and business line manager for
Atlas Copco’s U.S. Industrial Air Division.
“Marine environments demand optimal performance
under harsh conditions, but that doesn’t mean
customers should have to compromise other
attributes, including space allotments and noise
levels, while also sacrificing easy
installation, and low maintenance and
operational costs.”
Due to a forced air flow, the crankcase is
heated much faster, helping to eliminate
condensate water. In combination with a cooling
water shut-off solenoid valve, no condensation
can infiltrate and harm the compressor.
Developed for the marine industry
Like all of Atlas Copco’s marine air solutions,
the new LT KE is fully certified in accordance
with all marine class certifications. Atlas
Copco’s starting air compressors are designed,
manufactured and certified specifically for the
marine industry, but they are also perfectly
suitable for industrial applications, such as
starting air for diesel engines on power plants.
Atlas Copco’s marine solutions
With the new water-cooled LT KE, Atlas Copco
extends its marine portfolio once again with a
new and economical air solution. Matching
equipment, such as air receivers, working or
instrument air compressors as well as air
treatment, are also available. Atlas Copco is
also developing a fully certified, air-cooled
version of the LT KE that will be launched in
early 2012. Please check www.atlascopco.com/marine
for more information.

EnKon’s
Heavy Duty Lifts Solve Ergonomic Problem for
Commercial Tractor Company
Walled Lake, Michigan, EnKon Systems, Herkules
Equipment Corporation’s brand name of lift
systems solved a tractor manufacturer’s
ergonomic lifting problem by designing two heavy
duty pneumatic scissor lifts that maintain a
surface flatness of +/- ½” with minimal
deflection, and providing a closed lift height
of 8.5” enabling the tractor to be pushed onto
the lift from an 8.5” height platform. All this
while still providing 25” of travel. To enable
the operators to effortlessly move the massive
lifts (8 foot by 8 foot) down an in-ground
track, EnKon utilized an air bearing system
which was incorporated into the design of the
heavy duty lifts.
EnKon’s custom-made lifts utilized two sets of
scissor arms. Each heavy duty lift was designed
to support 6000 lbs. which would accommodate any
future heavier tractor model additions. And the
low-profile characteristics of the EnKon lift
design enable the customer to accommodate the
8.5” high platform.
The customer was impressed with how stable the
tractor-loaded lift was when in the raised
position. And they appreciated the fact that the
use of the air bearing system would turn a
back-breaking burden into an easily accomplished
task. The original lifting problem began when
the manufacturer introduced a new model whose
weight exceeded the capacity of the lifts being
used. The new tractor weighed 3000 pounds, and
since the existing lifts were designed to
accommodate only 2000 lbs. they began to tip
under the excessive weight.
EnKon Systems is the brand name for Herkules
Equipment Corporation’s electric, hydraulic and
air powered scissor lift table systems. Herkules
has been manufacturing lifting equipment close
to 30 years, building a solid reputation
specifically for designing & manufacturing air
operated lift systems for a variety of
applications. Standard and custom lift systems
include; Electric Belt Drive Lifts, Electric
Ball Screw Lifts, Air Lifts, Hydraulic Lifts,
Lift Tables, Lift & Rotates, Lift & Tilts,
Operator Lifts, Power Rotate Systems, Cart
Positioners, Pallet Positioners, Post Lifts, and

from FIPA: Oval vacuum cups for cylindrical
products
The right solution for any handling task:
FIPA (www.fipa.com) has extended its range of
vacuum cups by adding oval vacuum cups for
cylindrical workpieces.
While classic oval vacuum cups are flat and
offer only a small attachment area for
cylindrical parts, the new vacuum cups feature a
sealing face with a three-dimensional, oval
shape.
The contour of the suction lip partially grips
the workpiece resulting in significantly better
suction than classic oval vacuum cups. The
advantage is that very small diameter workpieces
can be securely gripped even at high speeds.
Reliable handling solutions for pipettes,
pencils, bolts, needles and the like can thus be
realized efficiently. The new oval vacuum cups
for cylindrical workpieces are available in
oil-resistant NBR (Acrylonitrile Butadiene
Rubber) or FDA-compliant, temperature-resistant
silicone.

Rexroth
Expands Non-Contact Transfer Units to Include
High-Grade Polymer Version
* Addition to standard aluminum version
* Ideal for food and beverage industry
applications
The Non-Contact Transfer (NCT) unit from Rexroth
is a unique picking device that operates on the
Bernoulli principle, which applies airflow under
the device to create a vacuum and lift force
between the center and circumference. The line
is now expanded to include a high-grade polymer
version.
In the last few years, the NCT transfer system
has solved many customer problems associated
with how to effectively handle materials that
are porous, delicate, or have rough or soft
surfaces. Now, in addition to the standard
aluminum version, the NCT is available in PEEK (Polyetheretherketone),
a high-grade polymer. The material expands the
potential applications of the NCT to areas where
aluminum components are not suitable. Resistance
to chemicals, conventional solvents, acids,
salts and oil are properties that make this new
version of the NCT an ideal handling component
for both the packaging and food/beverage
industries. FDA- and EG-approved materials

Configured
in no time
Vacuum technology specialist J. Schmalz presents
the first modular system for fast and easy setup
of vacuum end effectors for the packaging
industry
Schmalz introduced the new modular system for
vacuum end effectors (VEE) at the Interpack 2011
trade fair. It makes for fast and flexible
gripper configurations for pick and place
processes, for use in case packers, in carton
and tray erecting machines, in top and side
loading machines as well as in packaging
machines with frequent format changes.
Instead of going back to rigid end effectors
made in individual production, system
integrators, machine and robot manufacturers now
have the option to set up or reconfigure
flexible end effectors: A wide selection of
combinations of vacuum feed and zones,
connection elements and suction pad connections
is available. All elements of the modular system
are available for download as CAD models on the
website of the manufacturer (www.schmalz.com) to
be quickly combined into the required
configuration on your PC.
The VEE modular system from Schmalz permits
minimum configurations with one suction pad or a
size of 38x38 mm and a dead weight of only 60 g.
The largest configurable vacuum end effector
comes with 12 suction pads at variable distances
and a maximum gripper size of 300x200 mm at a
weight of 800 g. Users can select suction pads
from the highly specialized offer of the
manufacturer depending on their requirements:
Flat suction pad SGPN for handling fragile foil
and blister packaging, flat suction pad SPF for
handling stable cardboard boxes, bellows suction
pad SPB4 for handling filled bags or flow wrap
packaging.
The VEE masters loads of up to 2000 g and
process accelerations up to 10 g (100 m/s²)
regardless of the type of product it is
handling, which means it meets all the
requirements of the fast pick and place
processes typical for the packaging industry.
Gripper changeover times are kept to a minimum
thanks to the standard quick-change adapter.
Another feature is the hose-free vacuum
distribution within the system, which reduces
possible leakage and ensures greater efficiency
and faster response times.
All VEE elements are made of polysulfone PSU
according to FDA guidelines. They are resistant
to alkaline and acidic cleaning agents and can
be steam sterilized. This makes them suitable
not only for the packaging industry but
especially for use in the food processing
industry.
Schmalz offers a 120 piece VEE starter kit that
includes all components for setup of up to two
end effectors, including suction pads and manual
quick-change coupler with bayonet fastener.

operations, smoke and particulate from almost
any “spot” application.
A safe and improved healthy condition in the
workplace improves employee morale, increases
worker productivity, decreases absenteeism and
even reduces insurance costs in many cases. A
cleaner environment can even enhance the
performance of machinery and sometimes cut
maintenance costs. However, until now there was
no low cost solution to enhance the environment.
The low cost, compact and portable unit operates
utilizing a minimal amount of compressed air. It
comes with a magnetic stand to “plug into
position” on any magnet accepting metal surface.
Simply connect the snap – on collection
attachments and clamp a 2” hose on the opposite
side, hook up your compressed air and you are
set to go. Comes complete with shut-off valve.

SUPERIOR
X-STREAM™ AIR BLADE™ AIR KNIFE BETTER BUILT AND
OUT PERFORMS OTHERS
Tests indicate that the compressed air operated
Nex Flow™ X-stream™ Air Blade™ air knife system
is one of the most quiet and efficient of any
compressed air operated air knife available.
Unlike many competitive aluminum air knife
products the X-stream™ Air Blade™ air knife is
“anodized” for longer material life in difficult
factory environments. The unit is labeled
“Silent” because of extremely low exhaust noise
levels under 70 dBA.
The Nex Flow™ X-stream™ Air Blade™ air knife is
available in regular anodized aluminum and in
hard anodized aluminum should there be a risk of
any abrasion or rubbing with materials while in
operation. In addition, stainless steel versions
are available for very high temperature and
highly corrosive environments.
All of Nex Flow™ air knife systems come with
stainless steel shims – not cheap plastic ones
that wear out, all at no extra charge. Despite
the use of filters to keep out moisture and
dirt, even small amounts of debris or moisture
or oil can still damage weak, flimsy plastic
shims. Stainless steel shims are a standard with
all Nex Flow™ blow off products that require
them, offering long life and consistent
performance.
Applications include replacing drilled pipe,
rows of nozzles for all types of blow-off and
even for cooling applications. Energy reduction
in compressed air use can be anywhere from 50%
to 90% depending on the application. Lengths are
available from 2” to 54” . Units may be coupled
together for longer lengths utilizing a
“coupling” kit in either aluminum or stainless
steel.

Polygon
Company Announces Revolutionary New Cylinder
System
WALKERTON, IN – Polygon Company is proud to
announce their new pneumatic cylinder known as
CTT (Constrained Tube Technology). CTT is a
complete pneumatic system that allows the
composite tube to be fitted within the confines
of a thin-walled outer host. Thecomposite tube
carries greater than 90% of the pressure vessel
loads while the metallic host enables
traditional assembly techniques such as welding,
threading, retention rings, and etc.
A housing must be used to handle the additional
pressure load for the complete tube assembly.
“Housings can be 80/20 aluminum or other
machined metal. It could be any
material, even a wooden box,” said Paul
Lashbrook, lead CTT engineer. Containing
housings do not need to be cylindrical nor do
they need to be honed or plated, and can even be
a lowgradesteel. “The housing provides a durable
casing for CTT, supporting and protecting the
lightweight cylinder,” Lashbook continued. The
CTT cylinder is an entire thin-walled actuator
system utilizing a new end cap attachment
system.
The approach enables the design engineer to
achieve the benefits of composite cylinder
tubing such as corrosion resistance, improved
seal life and unique fluid flow properties
without manufacturing assembly changes.
For non-housed units, lower cost polymeric
cylinders can provide the needed structure. “In
traditional cylinders, the metal walls provide
both pressure containment and structural
strength. With CTT, the inner composite sleeve
does all the load work while the thermoplastic
outer tube and connection elements provide
seamless and cost-effective assembly,” said
James Shobert, Polygon Company CEO. End caps can
be fitted to secure the host tube and provide a
very traditional cylinder outline for non-housed
units as illustrated. This blends the high
performance characteristics of advanced
composites with the durability and economics of
standard polymeric materials.
One consistent Achilles Heel of retrofitting
composites into existing applications is being
able to assemble the finished product using
traditional metalworking techniques. Composite
cylinder tubing cannot withstand drilling and
maintain structural strength. This limited
previous composite tubing to tie-rod cylinder
applications almost exclusively. CTT’s tubing is
not immune to this attachment problem. However,
the required housings can be chosen to provide
ample attachment points for mounting the
assembly.
CTT has surpassed 27 million cycles under
elevated testing pressure and is the perfect
solution to demanding pressure vessel
applications. Balancing performance and cost, it
is uniquely suited for today’s lean operational
environments.

Pick
and Place Unit PPU-E30
The fastest Pick & Place Unit on the market does
not require any sensitive moving motor cables.
With racing cycle times and an excellent repeat
accuracy of less than 0.01 mm, it is setting
benchmarks in the assembly of small components.
The PPU-E30 carries out high speed assembly
tasks with the highest precision. Cycle time is
only 0.58 seconds including switching and
gripping times at a 40 mm vertical stroke, a 120
mm horizontal stroke, and a moving mass of 2 kg.
All the utility lines for power supply, sensor,
and pneumatic systems are plugged into the
rearward stationary connection. Cable breaks and
disturbances of the unit are now a thing of the
past. The freely programmable unit is designed
for a vertical stroke of up to 100 mm, a
horizontal stroke of 270 mm, and a moving mass
of 3 kg.
The narrow housing as well as the media supply
via the back panel, allow a compact,
maintenance- and assembly-friendly sandwich
construction of several units next to each
other. Two integrated linear encoder systems
control the vertical and horizontal motion and
assure a high repeat accuracy. Intelligent
regulators control the cantilever arm as well as
the actuators without a higher-ranking control
unit. The required software is already
integrated, thus the unit can be commissioned by
simple Plug & Play.
Up to six integrated valves operated by one
single air feeding, supplies all the pneumatic
actuators. This minimizes the compressed air and
consequently the energy consumption, and
provides an enormous clock frequency. Since no
motor or cables are moved, and the remaining
moving components are manufactured in a
light-weight design, the unit proves to be
energy-efficient and economic. It works together
with the SCHUNK module program and can be
equipped with various actuators. In the largest
construction stage, the PPU-E30 can utilize an
electric rotary module with rotary feed-through,
but also with two sensors and pneumatic
connections.

Don't
Let Freezing Temperatures Fry Your Sensor
It only takes a small formation of ice deep
inside the inlet cavity of a pressure transducer
to destroy the sensing element. To prevent this,
Ashcroft engineers have developed a unique
isolation method that will prevent water from
contacting the sensor, therefore eliminating the
possibility of transducer failure due to ice
damage.
If you are using transducers to monitor the
pressure of water or other liquids in freezing
temperatures, you'll want to learn more about
the Ashcroft solution by reading our
Product Information Page TR/PI-23 entitled
"Freeze-Proof Modification for Ashcroft Pressure
Transducers".

Long
Static Eliminator Neutralizes And Cleans Wide
Surfaces
EXAIR's new Long Super Ion Air Knives neutralize
static electricity while blowing away dust and
particulates from printed surfaces, paper,
plastics and three dimensional shapes up to 96"
(2438mm) across. The wide laminar airstream full
of static eliminating ions is effective at high
speeds and provides superior cleaning up to 20
feet away. Poor print quality, dust attraction,
tearing, jamming, and related equipment downtime
can be eliminated.
The Long Super Ion Air Knife is highly
efficient, using only a minimal amount of
compressed air at 5 PSIG to entrain high volumes
of surrounding room air. An electrically powered
static control bar fills the uniform sheet of
air with a high concentration of positive and
negative ions. The laminar airstream increases
the surface exposure to the ions, making it
effective for high speed processes and over long
distances. Force can be adjusted from a "blast"
to a "breeze". The shockless design is UL
Component Recognized to US and Canadian safety
standards. There are no moving parts to wear
out.
Long Super Ion Air Knives are available in 60"
(1524mm), 72" (1829mm), 84" (2134mm) and 96"
(2438mm) lengths that are fully assembled. A
factory installed plumbing kit is also available
that makes it easy to connect Long Super Ion Air
Knives to any plant's compressed air system and
obtain the best performance. Prices start at
$1,739.

SCHUNK
long stroke gripper PHL
With the PHL, SCHUNK launches a new generation
of long stroke grippers. The PHL from SCHUNK
alternatively disposes of a multi-tooth guidance
or a profiled rail guidance, which increases the
degree of efficiency of the module. More
importantly, the modular design of the PHL
offers 90 standardized versions from the
beginning! Thus over-sizing is avoided, the air
consumption and energy is minimized, and the
required space for applications is reduced. With
the PHL, SCHUNK makes efficient gripping of
large strokes possible.
With multi-tooth jaw guidance, the PHL is
particularly suitable for rough environments.
The gripper is equipped with roller bearings and
profiled rail guidance, achieving a 25% higher
degree of efficiency. The guiding carriage of
the gripper fingers have ball bearings, which
minimizes friction and evenly distributes
forces. Since the jaw guide is sealed and
permanently lubricated, the bearing capacity of
the gripper increases and reduces wear. Users
benefit from the reliability, precision, and
long service life of the components.
No matter if the gripper is equipped with a
multi-tooth guidance or profiled rail guidance,
five sizes with piston diameters between 25 and
63 mm are available. The design engineer can
choose among three strokes per size, covering
the whole range of strokes between 30 and 160
mm. Moreover, a spring-actuated gripping force
maintenance for ID or OD gripping is available,
making90 standardized versions. The largest size
of the PHL disposes of a gripping force of 3500
N and a maximum admissible finger length of 600
mm. Every size is available as a special version
with viton seals or for high temperatures of up
to 130 °C (266° F). Gripper positions can be
monitored by inductive proximity switches or
magnetic switches.

The
STARCYL955C BRIK LDT for Pneumatic Cylinders
With the demand for automation greater than
ever, the need to replace limit and zone sensors
on pneumatic cylinders with continuous feedback
has become obvious. Speeding up and improving
your process is what you need in order to stay
competitive. Knowing your exact position at any
given moment is essential to that end.
Replace your existing limit sensors with the
STARCYL 955C BRIK GEN III for continuous
position feedback with your choice of Analog,
Digital, or Quadrature outputs. The 955C BRIK
GEN III senses the magnet located in your
existing pneumatic cylinder and uses it to relay
absolute positioning information to the
machine's controller. The 955C BRIK GEN III can
be retro-fitted to cylinders in the field using
standard mounting brackets or your own
customized solution. The 955C solution has no
moving parts to wear out. Magnetostrictive
technology is used to "see" through the aluminum
extrusion and detect the position of the magnet
mounted inside the cylinder.
Three versions of the 955C BRIK GEN III are
available. The 955CA offers analog output in
either voltage or current with your choice of 0
to 10 VDC, 10 to 0 VDC, 4 to 20mA, or 20 to 4mA.
The unit can easily be reconfigured in the field
from a 0-10 VDC to a 10-0 VDC or 4-20 mA to a
20-4 mA output.
The 955CD is designed for digital output with
choice of Control Pulse, Start/Stop Pulse, or
Variable Pulse output.
The Quadrature output from the 955CDQ allows
wiring directly to any incremental encoder input
card, without the need for a special converter
module or a PLC interface card. The 955CDQ can
be ordered with 1-9999 cycles per inch of output
resolution in lengths of 5 to 180 inches. The
transducer features an input to re-zero the
probe "on-the-fly". Another unique feature is
the "burst" mode. An input on the transducer
triggers a data transfer of all the incremental
position data relative to the set zero position.
This can be used to achieve absolute position
updates when power is restored to the system,
eliminating the time-consuming need to "re-home"
the machine.
The 955C BRIK GEN III has truly unique features.
The first one being the LDT's auto-tuning
capability: the ability to sense a magnet within
the pneumatic cylinder and adjust its signal
strength accordingly.
Another feature is that the analog output is
programmable over the entire active stroke
length. The active stroke area of the LDT lies
between the Null Zone and the Dead Band.
There is also a diagnostic LED located at the
connector to minimize setup time and
troubleshooting. The LED is green in normal
operation. Red will indicate no magnet present
or that the magnet has moved out of sensing
range. Yellow is an indication the magnet is out
of the programmed active range or if no
interrogation signal is detected.
The enclosure comes standard as IP67; however,
upgrading to IP68 is available as an option so
the LDT can be used in wet environments.
Note: The Pneumatic cylinder must have a magnet
in order to work.

Vacuum
users get a grip on productivity with the first
modular suction cup from Piab New piGRIP offers
energy and cost savings
Hingham, MA – Piab, a leading supplier of
industrial vacuum technology, launches its new
piGRIP suction cup, the first modular suction
cup on the market. The new piGRIP allows
companies to choose the ideal combination of lip
and bellow so products can be handled at
previously unprecedented speeds while realizing
energy savings.
Available with a range of independent lips,
bellows and fittings in sizes from 25-77mm, the
new piGRIP™ suction cup can be customized for
thousands of applications for full operational
flexibility. Whereas traditional grippers can
only be used for selected applications, the
piGRIP™ can be tailored to individual gripping,
lifting and height requirements to handle a
variety of products and fit with a number of
different machines. The piGRIP™ can be used with
new machines as well as for retrofitting
existing systems.
Overall line efficiency is enhanced with the
piGRIP™’s superior suction grip, which allows
for higher machine speeds. This powerful grip is
made possible through the variety of lip options
available with the piGRIP™, allowing
manufacturers to choose the desired hardness or
softness for optimum sealing. For example,
flexible lips provide extra sealing capability
for the handling of surface-leaking and porous
materials, such as corrugated cardboard..
With the piGRIP™, the ideal lip and bellow
combination can be selected so manufacturers are
no longer forced to compromise on either grip or
machine handling speed, which is often the case
with one-size-fits-all suction cup units. All of
Piab’s bellows have a proprietary thin wall
design which ensures that faster compressions
and returns can be achieved, allowing extra high
lifting force compared to traditional cups in
the same size. With this capability to handle
faster accelerations and more high speed lifts,
machines can run at faster speeds leading to
shorter production cycles, and increasing
overall productivity.
The piGRIP™ is also available in FDA approved
materials. Certificates are available for the
food industry, making the unique suction cup
suitable for applications where direct food
contact is necessary.
The new modular suction cup also contributes to
sustainability benefits. The piGRIP™ offers
20-50% more lifting force than similar sized
cups to reduce energy consumption and save
costs. The piGRIP™ also features 100% recyclable
and separable materials, which, once the suction
cup is recycled, can be reused for the same or a
number of other purposes. By reducing scrap this
contributes to an environmentally friendly waste
management program.
“With a growing awareness of environmental
issues, manufacturers are seeking solutions that
offer both optimum performance and energy
efficiency,” said Ed McGovern, Vice President,
Sales and Business Development North America,
Piab. “The new revolutionary piGRIP™ brings a
step change in vacuum technology by being the
first complete modular suction cup concept on
the market. This exciting development allows us
to help manufacturers optimize their vacuum
systems while also contributing to a sustainable
world.”

and de-stacking of flat or porous pieces using
compressed air.
Integrated design saves space and money
"We have the right solution for several of our
customers’ requirements needing a lifting
cylinder powered by compressed air," according
to FIPA President and
Owner Rainer Mehrer. This is a practical
solution, which only requires little space
thanks to optimum coordination of individual
components and is extremely
light weighing with only 220 g. This allows for
quick mounting and a reduction in hardware needs
and costs thanks to the integration of various
components
such as ejector, solenoid valves and cabling.
The mode of operation: The complete pick & place
workflow is controlled solely via switching the
compressed air supply on and off to the lifting
cylinder.
When it is switched on, the integrated ejector
creates a vacuum; the piston moves out, sucks in
the piece and then moves back. This works
extremely fast, so
that only the top piece is lifted and the
cylinder works independently of the stack
height.
When the compressed air is switched off, the
piston moves downward. The integrated blow-off
pulse enables fast placing of the pieces and
consequently ensures
short cycle times. Thanks to the cylinder rod
locked against rotation, the piece is placed in
the way it is picked. Differences in stack level
are no problem,
because the piston is stopped automatically when
it comes into contact with the work piece.
Meaningful expansion of a comprehensive product
range
The lifting cylinder powered by compressed air
expands the comprehensive FIPA product range in
the areas of vacuum technology and gripping
systems. A special
added value of the company's own development
philosophy: FIPA stands for flexible system
solutions, in which the individual components
are coordinated and can
be combined modularly according to needs.

piINLINE
Vacuum Generators
piINLINE is Piab’s new range of
energy-efficient, easy-to-use inline vacuum
ejectors based on COAX technology.
piINLINE comes in three sizes: Midi, Mini and
Micro. Each size is available with a choice of
three special options to enable optimized
performance and capacity for the specific
application including working at a low feed
pressure, providing high amounts of vacuum flow
or achieving deep vacuum levels.
The smallest model, the Micro, uses on average
50 % less energy than comparable products, which
means significantly less energy consumption and
lower carbon emissions. Sound levels are also
lower, which creates a better working
environment.
The product range is designed so that end-users
in factories can easily replace single-stage
inline ejectors. Under normal use, the medium
model in the piINLINE range, the Mini, will pay
for itself after just three months, thanks to
its low energy costs, while the payback time for
other models should be less than six months.

Multitude
of Refinements Improves GEMS LS-3 Series Level
Switch’s Durability and Keep Costs Low
PLAINVILLE, CT—LS-3 Series compact all plastic
liquid level switches, from Gems Sensors &
Controls, are ideal for shallow tanks,
restricted spaces or for any low-cost, high
volume use. The highly reliable design of the
LS-3 Series level switch operates on a simple
principle: a magnet-equipped float moving
directly with the liquid surface actuates a
hermetically sealed reed switch within the
unit’s stem. As with all Gems buoyancy type
level switches, contact between the fluid and
the switch is hermetically sealed, ensuring long
life and
reliable operation.
LS-3 Series level switches are available in a
wide variety of engineered plastics, including
polysulfone, polypropylene, and FDA-approved
PVDF. They offer broad water-based, chemical,
oil, and food grade compatibility at an
attractive price for OEMs. Models are available
to withstand temperatures ranging from - 40°F to
+250°F (-40°C to +121°C), and pressures to 150
psi (10.3 bar). These compact units measure as
little
as 0.75-inch in diameter and are less than 2” in
length below the mounting. A unique fluted stem
prevents build-up from dissolved solids in the
monitored liquid.
LS-3 Series switches are easy to install: they
operate with either end up, and are virtually
maintenance free. Mountings include 3/8”-16
straight thread, 1/8” NPT, G1/8”, and M12x1.75
straight thread. Switch actuation is easily
changed from N.O. to N.C. by reversing float
position on the stem. LS-3 switches are also
available in other unique configurations for
special applications, such as low liquid levels
and turbulent fluids.
Approvals include UL Recognition, CE, CSA and

DIRTY
AND WET COMPRESSED AIR LINES?
NEW UNIQUE PATENT PENDING LIQUID SEPARATOR
REMOVES 99.9% OIL AND WATER FROM
COMPRESSED AIR LINES.
The Nex FlowTM X-StreamTM Liquid Super Separator
uses a world patent pending
special radial nozzle centrifugal design to
remove 99.9% of liquid mist (including
water and oil mist) without the need of a
replaceable filter element. Standard
sizes are 9, 2, and 64 SCFM.
Unlike large upstream separators, these units
are designed to be used upstream from
an air gun, blow-off product or any device using
compressed air and may be used in
place of a standard air filter. If micron size
is a concern, you can still use a
standard water or oil filter but the replaceable
cartridge life will be dramatically
extended as the X-StreamTM Liquid Super
Separator will remove the vast majority of
the liquids and mist.
Units come complete with an automatic drain,
have extremely minimal pressure loss
and are virtually maintenance free. (Only the
automatic drain may be subject to
wear and tear and is easily replaced.)

TCU
Compensation Unit
Automatic insertion or gripping of precise
components is often a challenge. To be
successful, the components have to be exactly
aligned with one another. This results in high
investment for the customer to ensure proper
alignment. Even if components have very tight
tolerances, it can be difficult to find the
mounting or insertion position reliably. With
the TCU compensation unit from SCHUNK, the users
are able to overcome these challenges.
The system of SCHUNK, the leader in automation
components, consists of two base plates, which
are connected with each other via elastomer
pads. Therefore, the
compensation unit can compensate in the X, Y and
to some extent Z directions. Even
an angular error or a rotational error can be
corrected, if required. Depending on
the size of the unit, the compensation path in
X/Y-direction can be 2 to 4 mm, the
compensation angle can be between 1.5° and 3.5°.
Optionally, SCHUNK can equip the
TCU with a pneumatic locking device, which locks
the module rigid. This prevents the
attached tooling or gripper from being moved
during actuation of the handling
system.
About SCHUNK:
SCHUNK is a family owned operation and a global
player in one. Totaling more than 60
years of experience, SCHUNK is a leading
worldwide manufacturer of toolholding

New
sizes for the PEH Long-Stroke Servo-Electric
Gripper
SCHUNK has expanded its servo-electric 2-finger
parallel gripper of the PEH series to include
sizes 30 and 50. This once again significantly
expands the application spectrum for this
universal long-stroke gripper, because with a
maximum stroke of 100 millimeters per finger for
the PEH 50, these grippers are now suitable for
a large parts spectrum, extending from small
components to large workpieces. The robust
guides are designed for precise handling even at
high loads and the gripping force can be adapted
to the broad application spectrum – for the PEH
50 as high as 1400 N, with maximum finger
lengths of up to 250 millimeters.
The PEH grippers are driven by a brushless servo
motor, which transfers its power directly to the
ball bearing drive spindle. The base jaws are
moved by a driver on the spindle, while a
kinematic unit synchronizes the movements of the
two base jaws based on the rack and pinion
principle, which ensures exact centric gripping
with a repeat accuracy of 0.05 mm.
With the new SCHUK controller, the complete
control and power electronics are already
integrated in the grippers of the PEH series.
This controller is used for the standardized
control of almost all servo-electric components
from the SCHUNK product line and enables very
easy programming, pre-configuration and
commissioning. Single commands can be combined
to form complete tasks, and command libraries
that are once created can also be used for other
modules.

ROSS
CONTROLS Introduces its High-Relief
Pilot-Operated Regulator
(TROY, MI) – ROSS CONTROLS is proud to announce
the introduction of its High-Relief
Pilot-Operated Regulator for high-flow
applications. This multi-purpose regulator is an
asset tosystems requiring high relief capability
such as welding, blow molding operations,
steel,aluminum, and glass production.
In cylinder applications, this regulator excels
in maintaining optimal system pressure for
consistent operating conditions. For instance,
in an application where 100 psi is sent to
theregulator, the regulator can be set to
maintain a certain pressure (say 60 psi)
regardless of anydownstream resistance. Though
the cylinder process may create increased
backpressuredownstream, the regulator senses the
disparity and adjusts the pressure accordingly.
Thisconsistent pressure helps provides favorable
system conditions for high quality production.
Additionally, this high-relief regulator also
offers enhanced ease-of-use because it can be
installed in a difficult-to-reach location while
its control regulator is mounted in a more
easily accessible location.
Available in ¼” through 1 ¼” port sizes, the
regulator is inline mounted and utilizes a
diaphragmdesign. It handles a maximum inlet
pressure of 400 psig, outlet pressure of up to
250 psig and has flow rates exceeding 400 scfm.
With the convenience of its full-size relief
port, the regulator offers high pressure relief
of up to 200 scfm. For flexibility, the
regulator is available with an optional pressure
gauge and can also be ordered in a non-relieving
configuration.

Highly
Modular Valve Manifold System from Bosch Rexroth
Series HF02-LG pneumatic valve system from
Rexroth with uniform interface
Thanks to its high level of modularity, the new
HF02-LG can be integrated in a wide variety of
automation concepts.
The HF02-LG series from Rexroth rounds out its
standardized range of HF valve manifold systems
with a weight-optimized base plate valve
featuring high flow rates. The dependable HF
family is now available with flow rates of
0.4Cv, 0.7Cv, and 1.4Cv and can be actuated with
just one bus connection for all series.
The uniform connection technology for Rexroth
valve manifold systems simplifies integration of
pneumatics in a wide variety of automation
concepts. Thanks to its modular design, the
system enables use of multiple plugs and
connections for all common field buses, with and
without I/O signal processing and supports an
integrated Drive & Diagnostic Link. The uniform
interface for common field bus control
(B-design) permits a simple and clear
combination of various valve manifold systems,
as well as standardized programming.
The new HF02-LG valve manifold system benefits
from a free selection of connection technology.
With a flow rate of 0.4Cv with a valve width of
20 mm, the system can accommodate up to 16 valve
positions in one unit. An exceptionally modular
design makes it possible to change the
electrical controller without having to
disassemble the valve manifolds. Electrical
linking with other valve manifold systems, such
as the HF03-LG and the HF04-XF, or individual
valves, is simple using Rexroth's module
extension.
Robust parallel plug connectors in the base
plates facilitate conversion of an HF02-LG valve
unit and the plug-in valve makes it possible to
exchange valve functions quickly and easily.
Another special feature is that the customer can
convert the pilot from an internal pilot control
to an external pilot control directly on the
left end plate.
The HF02-LG provides all valve functions: 2 x
3/2, 5/2, and 5/3. Dual-pressure operation is
possible using separate exhaust connections for
channels 3 and 5. Pressure zones can be limited
to one valve. In principle, the valve manifold
system has been designed for an internal working
pressure of 36 to 145 psi and can be operated in
a temperature range of 32 to 122°F. Up to 32
coils can be actuated with the 44-pin D-Sub
high-density plug.
Rexroth provides a user-friendly configurator to
assist designers who would like to integrate
this valve manifold system in their
installation. This online tool lets you easily
configure valve units with all their accessories
and displays them with a pneumatic circuit
diagram or dimensional drawing. The latest
enhancement: The user can download the
configured unit as a 3-D PDF in which the unit
can be rotated on the screen and viewed from all
sides.
The HF02-LG valve manifold system is ideal for
applications requiring a high level of
modularity, such as in machine tools,
special-purpose machines, welding technology, or
polymer processing.

New
Centric Grippers with Multitooth Guidance
Gripper
PZB-plus is a newly designed series of 3-finger
centric grippers, whose special feature is a
central bore designed as a sleeve. This central
bore, which is also equipped with female threads
for customer-specific add-ons, can be used to
supply material or as an ejector. However, it
can
also be used to monitor the handling or assembly
process with a camera system or to pick up
workpieces and centre them using the sleeve
during the gripping process, for example. There
are also threads integrated on the upper face of
the gripper in addition to the threads on the
cover plate, to facilitate mounting
customer-specific add-ons.
PZB-plus is available in two different stroke
length versions, whereby the smaller stroke
results in approximately double gripping force.
The six sizes from 64 to 200 are fitted with a
multitooth guide, as is the case in the premium
series PGN-plus and PZN-plus. Therefore,
compared with the older PZB classic series, PZB-plus
can handle 100 percent higher torques in
directions at right angles to the gripping
motion. This makes it possible to use smaller
grippers than before, and thus to work more
economically.
An optional gripping force safety device is also
available for PZB-plus, which are spring loaded
for ID or OD gripping. The position is monitored
either via a magnetic switch or inductive
proximity switch, and the hose-free direct
connection makes assembly and installation
significantly easier.
The comprehensive and sophisticated accessories
available for the other plus series will of
course also be available for the PZB-plus
series. This includes force measurement jaws,
quick- change jaws, valves, sensors or jaw
blanks.

Tolomatic’s
new ERD electric rod-style actuator series
designed as economic electric alternative to
pneumatic cylinders
The compact ERD electric rod-style actuators are
compatible with many NEMA
standard stepper or servomotors for easy,
flexible and powerful electric actuator
solutions.
HAMEL, Minn. – Tolomatic’s new ERD electric
rod-style actuators are designed as
an economical electric alternative to
non-repairable pneumatic cylinders and
provide design engineers with a new option for
automating manual processes.
Sleek and compact, ERD electric rod-style
actuators deliver forces up to 75
pounds (334 N) at speeds up to 40 inches per
second (1,016 mm/sec). ERD
actuators are stroke configurable and ship
within five days from order entry at
the factory. The products are suitable for a
wide variety of applications,
including product change-overs, pick-and-place,
sorting and diverting, heat-
staking and more.
“With the growing trend towards use of electric
actuators, the new patent
pending ERD electric rod-style actuator provides
an alternative to pneumatic
cylinders with the added benefit of greater
control of speed, acceleration and
force,” says Aaron Dietrich, electric products
manager, Tolomatic. In addition,
the ERD is a very affordable option for
automating manual processes and is
particularly exciting for us in that the line
opens up the entry level segment
of the market where we have not had catalog
products available in the past.”
The ERD electric rod-style actuator is available
in body sizes that are
equivalent to 5/8”, 1” and 1.5” bore
non-repairable pneumatic cylinders. These
three sizes are available in stroke lengths up
to 8, 10 and 12 inches,
respectively, and forces up to 20, 40 and 75
pounds. The three sizes, from
small to large, accept NEMA 11, 17 or 23 frame
stepper and servo motors. The
acme lead screw is made of high-performance
steel and is available in three
lead sizes per size to optimize speed or force.
“The ERD actuator comes standard with a
metric-threaded rod end that makes it
compatible with a wide variety of commercially
available accessories,” says
Dietrich. “This makes the conversion from
pneumatic to electric even more
convenient.”
ERD products are round bodied, following the
footprint of most pneumatic
actuators in this performance class. The rear
head of the actuator features an
oversized main bearing to accommodate high
thrust loads and provide long life.
The main tube and thrust tube are made of
stainless steel for high rigidity and
corrosion resistance, while the metric-threaded
nose mount accepts a jam nut
that provides convenient mounting for many
applications. Mounting options
include a rear trunnion mount, foot mounts or a
front flange mount.
The ERD actuators can accommodate six different
sensing or switching choices:
reed, solid state PNP (sourcing) or solid state
NPN (sinking), normally open,
flying leads or quick-disconnect. The switches
are activated by a standard
internal magnet located inside the thrust tube.
Commonly used for end-of-stroke
positioning, these switches allow clamp-on
installation anywhere along the
actuator tube. All switches are CE rated and are
RoHS compliant for
environmental compatibility.
For more than 50 years, Tolomatic has been a
leading supplier of electric
linear actuators, pneumatic actuators and power
transmission products for
factory automation. Its extensive product line
also includes servo-driven high
-thrust actuators, servomotors and stepper
motors, stepper drives and
configured linear-motion systems.
Tolomatic’s electric linear and pneumatic
actuators are used in a variety of
industries, including the packaging, material
handling, medical, food
processing, automotive, semiconductor and
general automation industries. For

Fabco-Air's
Fabcoat Protective Coatings
FABCO-AIR, Inc. now offers proprietary coatings
for their aluminum air cylinder
product lines, providing a cost effective
alternative to stainless steel. In
rigorous life-cycle testing, coated aluminum
products were well protected
against the effects of harsh environments. For a
fraction of the cost of 303 or
304 stainless air cylinders, FABCO can deliver
superior, corrosion-resistant
aluminum cylinders within 14 to 20 days.
Two Fabco-Air coating approaches are presented
here for your consideration.
Fabcoat-1205™ General Corrosion Resistance
Pancake® II cylinder with protective finish
Fabcoat-1205™ is designed to provide protection
against galvanic corrosion that
is caused by atmospheric and environmental
conditions such as high humidity,
acid rain, salt spray and salt air.
Galvanic Corrosion
In basic terms, galvanic corrosion occurs when
dissimilar metals are in contact
or near proximity to each other and are exposed
to moisture or even high
humidity. The less noble of the two metals will
corrode preferentially while
the more noble material will remain essentially
undamaged. For example, an
aluminum cylinder end cap will corrode while the
steel fasteners that hold the
assembly together do not.
The rate at which galvanic corrosion occurs
increases greatly when the moisture
contains salt or acid. Think of galvanic
corrosion as a battery. The less noble
material is the anode, the more noble material
is the cathode and the water is
the electrolyte. Water containing salt or acid,
for example, is more conductive
than tap water and is therefore a better
electrolyte.
Barrier Protection
Fabcoat-1205™ provides a unique barrier film to
prevent galvanic corrosion of
dissimilar metals. It encapsulates the component
to which it is applied and
provides a non-conductive surface similar to the
jacket on an electrical wire.
Because it is chemically bonded to the
substrate, it provides a highly durable,
watertight shield against the elements.
Appearance
Fabcoat-1205™ provides a durable, smooth silver
finish that is similar in
appearance to natural stainless steel or
aluminum.
Performance
•500+ hours ASTM B-117 salt spray protection.
•Excellent protection against UV light
degradation.
•Will not blister or lose adhesion when exposed
to intermittent or continuous
humidity
•Provides excellent protection against
detergents, solvents, lubricants and
fluids
Fabcoat-327™ Caustic and Oxidizer Protection
Unprotected steel, aluminum and even some grades
of stainless steel can be
damaged by cleaning solutions. Fabcoat-327™ is
designed to protect components
against the harmful effects of detergents,
caustic cleaners, and oxidizers
(bleach) that are commonly used in the food
service industry.
Failure mechanisms of unprotected metals or
common finishes:
•Stress Corrosion - Cleaning solutions can cause
intergranular oxidation within
the microstructure of metals. It may not be
obvious to the naked eye.
Components can fail when placed under load.
•General Corrosion - Protective finishes such as
plating or coating can be
removed with repeated washing. Once removed,
bare components are susceptible to
general corrosion.
•Removal of Passive Oxide Surface - Aluminum and
stainless steel rely on a
passive oxide layer on the surface of the
component for corrosion protection.
Cleaning solutions can penetrate or remove this
layer drastically reducing
corrosion resistance.
Appearance
Fabcoat-327™ provides a durable silver finish
that is similar in appearance to
natural stainless steel or aluminum.
Performance
•500+ hours ASTM B-117 salt spray protection.
•28 Hours 5% sodium chloride immersion with no
stress corrosion cracking.
•Will not blister or lose adhesion when exposed
to intermittent or continuous
humidity.
•Provides excellent protection against
detergents, solvents, lubricants and
fluids.
For complete assurance that our products will
meet or exceed your expectations,
send us your application details. We welcome the
opportunity to provide
verification testing of performance in advance
of any purchases.

SCHUNK
PRG 2-Finger Radial Gripper
The new PRG 2-Finger Radial Gripper from SCHUNK
combines high gripping moments with small
dimensions. The integrated pneumatic oval piston
drive guarantees maximum power density.
Radial gripping motions are often achieved by
integrating a slotted link gear.
Existing links cause an extreme reduction in the
gripping moment, if the opening
angles are rather small. SCHUNK has found a
solution for such an application; the
patented Single-Pin guide rail which ensures a
constant closing moment throughout the gripping
range. The new PRG did not change in dimensions
and can reliably grip larger
workpieces or workpieces with a larger tolerance
range. In addition, innovative
dampening, which is directly integrated in the
drive rod, allows short cycle times and
a much longer admissible finger length.
The multifunctional PRG has an adjustable stroke
to fit the individual application and
is also available with a gripping force safety
device, in a high-temperature version
and with three different opening angles (30° /
60° / 90°). The end position can be
optionally monitored by inductive proximity
switches or magnetic switches.SCHUNK Inc.

New
roller-screw option on Tolomatic’s integrated
servomotor actuator (IMA) makes it the longest
lasting integrated electric actuator
New roller-screw option available on IMA
rod-style linear actuators provides
significantly higher service life at forces up
to 3,300 pounds.
HAMEL, Minn. – Tolomatic’s integrated-motor
rod-style actuator (IMA) is now capable of
delivering up to 3,300 pounds of force when
equipped with the new roller-screw option. The
Tolomatic IMA incorporates a hollow core rotor
and skewed motor windings into its unique
servomotor design for an extremely compact
package with increased dynamic performance and
service life compared to traditional rod-style
actuators. The IMA’s unique integrated motor
design is well suited for applications such as
pressing, clamping, valve control, spot welding
and volumetric filling.
“With the addition of the roller-screw option,
the service life of the IMA increases by about
ten times or more in high-force applications,”
says Aaron Dietrich, electric product manager,
Tolomatic. “In fact, in an IMA 44, the estimated
life of the roller-screw is about ten million
inches of travel at a mean force of 2,000
pounds. The standard ball screw on the IMA
offers better efficiency and economy, but the
roller screw option offers higher force, better
accuracy and longer service life in high-force
applications.”
The hollow core rotor design allows the nut of
the screw to pass inside the rotor to provide a
very compact package. “This can decrease overall
actuator length by as much as 18 inches compared
to standard actuators due to the elimination of
a separate motor, motor mount and gearbox. In
addition, the skewed stator windings minimize
the cogging of the motor to provide smoother,
more efficient motion and improved force
repeatability,” says Dietrich. The compact
footprint and efficient operation of the IMA,
combined with the flexibility of control from an
electric actuator, makes the IMA a powerful and
viable alternative for replacing fluid power
cylinders, he says.
The Tolomatic IMA with the new roller-screw
option can exert a force of up to 3,300 pounds
and move a top speed of about 12 inches per
second. The IMA is available with a choice of
motor voltages in any incremental stroke length
from 6 inches to18 inches. Built with
Tolomatic’s Endurance Technology features for
maximum durability and extended service life,
the IMA has a patent-pending lead-screw
lubrication system that allows easy
re-lubrication without disassembly. Tolomatic’s
sizing and selection software makes selecting an
IMA easy. All orders are built-to-order and
shipped with Tolomatic’s industry leading
five-day delivery.
For more than 50 years, Tolomatic has been a
leading supplier of electric linear actuators,
pneumatic actuators and power transmission
products for factory automation. Its extensive
product line also includes servo-driven
high-thrust actuators, servo and stepper motors,
stepper drives and configured linear-motion
systems. Tolomatic’s electric linear and
pneumatic actuators are used in a variety of
industries, including the packaging, material
handling, medical, food processing, automotive,
semiconductor and general automation industries.

With
Price Reductions of Up to 70 Percent, Enfield
Technologies Makes Proportional Pneumatic
Control More Affordable
Thanks to some innovative engineering, Enfield
Technologies has reached an important goal -
making a complete proportional pneumatic control
system much more affordable.
"We wanted to bring proportional pneumatics to
new audiences," said Ed Howe, Enfield
Technologies' President. "In motion control,
that means a pneumatic actuator with
intermediate positioning needs to break the
$1,000 price barrier. We beat that target by a
wide margin, with the total price of a basic
system coming down from $1,841 to $884 - a
reduction of 52 percent."
A basic positioning system includes a
proportional valve and control electronics
manufactured by Enfield Technologies paired with
a pneumatic actuator and a position
sensor provided by a variety of highly regarded
partner companies. The same valves and control
electronics used in motion control are also used
for proportional pressure, flow, and force
regulation applications.
During the last 18 months, Enfield Technologies
has revised its sourcing and manufacturing
processes. They have also reengineered several
key products, adding new features, improving
performance and reducing costs. This has allowed
the company to offer price reductions averaging
42 percent on its primary components. For
example, the LS-C10 controller dropped 70
percent, from $564 to $169.20, and the LS-V25s
proportional valve dropped 45 percent, from $721
to $396.60. Enfield
Technologies has also implemented volume
discounts and an additional 5 percent bundle
discount (bundle kits include a controller,
valve and cable).
Enfield Technologies has added more than 35
technical resellers and integration partners
over the last year. The company has also
launched several new products,
including the Enfinity System (C2 controller and
M2 valves). "Expanded distribution and new
products have led to growth and increased
volumes," Howe said, "which has
led to further cost reductions that we are
passing along to our customers."

AutomationDirect
Cuts Programming Software Price to Free
Cumming, GA In keeping with its philosophy of
always offering the best value in the automaton
industry, AutomationDirect has recently cut the
price of its Think & Do programming software for
their WinPLC processor from $695 to free. Before
this price cut, the lowest cost option for
programming the WinPLC processor with Think & Do
was purchase of a Think & Do WinPLC-only
programming package for $695. Now, customers can
download the Think & Do v8.04 Keyless
Development Demo package for PC-based control
for free. The free Demo is offered as a download
only, but it includes the same development
software that customers receive when they
purchase the full Think
& Do development package for $1,895.
Like most industrial automation controller
programming software, Think & Do consists of a
development package that runs on a PC, and one
or more runtime keys that
reside on real-time industrial controller
application targets. The free Think & Do Demo
package has no limits when it comes to
development, only in terms of runtime targets.
But, these limits don’t affect the WinPLC as it
comes pre-loaded with Windows CE and Think & Do
runtime software. This means that customers can
download the Think & Do v8.04 Keyless
Development Demo package for free, create
software applications with Think & Do, and
download these applications to an unlimited
number of WinPLC targets.
For real-time industrial controller targets not

New
POD demand drains from JORC do not require
electricity and do not require control air.
One of the biggest problems
pneumatic drains have is the complex
installation procedure compared to a
timer drain. Well, those days are gone.
The POD drains are simple
to install, do not require electricity and do
not require control air.
The POD is a demand drain.
Its large orifice and robust design are
made for installation under air receivers, after
coolers, compressors and large dryers etc.
Two sizes, a 1/2" and a
3/4" model are available. Combined they cover
all compressor capacities.
Both models include top and side inlet options
to offer even more installation
simplicity. For routine checking purposes they
both have test features.

changes in input pressure or the load applied
(within the limits specified in the catalogue).
An easy-to-read light display shows the status
of the appliance at all times.
The generator's electric power can be used to
power:
- control units, such as the PLC and PC

Bimba
Introduces Pneumatic Isolation Valves as
Addition to Air Prep Product Line
Today, Bimba Manufacturing introduced a new
safety valve (lock out – tag out style) to its
line of Air Preparation Products. Current OSHA
and ANSI/PMMI standards1
require a lockout valve installed on all
air-operated equipment to isolate the equipment
from its air supply and to exhaust all
downstream air pressure making the equipment
safe for maintenance.
The Pneumatic Isolation Valve (PIV Series) is
available in nine sizes, from 1/4" to 1-1/2"
with a full range of accessories to help
companies conform to these standards. Many
competitive models fail to comply with these
standards due to reduced-sized exhaust ports and
designs that can be locked in a “partially on”
condition.
“We feel the addition of this pneumatic energy
isolation valve will help our customers improve
safety in their plant and conform to current
industry requirements set
forth by OSHA and ANSI/PMMI,” said Jerry
Scherzinger, Bimba’s Air Preparation Product
Manager. “We remain focused on our growing line
of air preparation equipment and these new
safety valves perfectly complement Bimba’s line
of air prep products.”
The new PIV Series catalog is available in
electronic format on the Bimba website. Learn

reference safety standards and

Two
Compressors – One Cabinet! Kaeser’s HSD is the
first of its kind
Announcing Kaeser’s latest innovation in
progressive air system technology – the new
2-in-1 HSD compressor! It is the first of its
kind featuring two independently operating
compressors in a single enclosure. These new
packages are available from 500-650 hp, and
deliver flows from 1632-3002 cfm and pressures
from 100-217 psig.
Each HSD incorporates two individual compressor
units including a motor, Sigma Profile airend,
separator aftercooler, draintrap and filtration.
Because each module is a complete compressor –
and not just two airends stacked together – the
HSD provides maximum part-load efficiency,
built-in redundancy, and reduced installation
costs.
HSD compressor units are started one after
another to reduce inrush current and protect
against network overload. Both compressor units
have dedicated Sigma Controls connected via
Profibus for energy efficient sequencing and
fully automatic monitoring of critical operating
and maintenance indicators. Plus with the Sigma
Frequency Control option, the HSD is not only
the largest variable frequency drive in its
class, but it also doubles the flow range of
previous models.
For more information on how the HSD can reduce
footprint, lower installation and maintenance
costs, while providing the air of two units,
please call 800-777-7873 or visit us at

Mini
Solenoid Operators for Multiple Uses from
Spartan
Spartan Scientific’s solenoid operator Series
3800 is specially designed for the pilot
function of 3 and 4 way pneumatic directional
control valves. These operators are available in
plate mount and are interchangeable with most
solenoid operator interfaces. The Series 3800
also can be used in 2 way or 3 way manifold
assemblies where multiple valves are combined
into a single block station for transmission of
air, water, or other liquid medium. The simple
plate mount operator and the interchangeable
orifice baskets easily make small manifolds for
regulation of either automated work stations or
coolant water in molding presses. These mini
solenoid operators are ideal for small custom
valves such as those used to operate hospital
bed air cushions and air-ride bellows car
systems. The Series 3800 has a pressure range of
vacuum to 200 psi depending on the orifice size
and is dust-tight and water resistant to IP 65.
The shading ring is standard enabling both AC
and DC coils to be used on all armatures.
Spartan Scientific is certified to ISO 9001 with
design. The Series 3800, like all Spartan
Scientific products, is manufactured in the USA
to the highest quality standards. Complete
specifications and options can be found at
